“Markets are looking for another robust jobs report, and bump up in (worker) wages, as a sign that the U.S. economy has escaped deflation and subpar growth of the past few years,” says Joe Quinlan, chief market strategist at U.S. Trust.US-unemployment-jobs-fair-007

The U.S. job-creation machine kicked off 2015 with robust gains. The economy produced a better-than-expected 257,000 new jobs in January, and the government also revised upwards job gains in the prior two months by 147,000. Another strong jobs report, Quinlan says, will underpin consumer confidence and spending going forward. It will also “cement” market expectations that the Federal Reserve, indeed, is going to raise interest rates later this year.

While fears of coming rate hikes could cause some market volatility, Wall Street will likely “grind through it,” Quinlan predicts. “The early stages of a Fed tightening cycle are bullish for equities. Why? Because growth is usually accelerating and profits remain strong,” he says.

Adds Tom Lee, managing partner at Fundstrat Global Advisors: “Labor markets have been solid, so continued momentum would be an affirmation of the consumer story. Moreover, with oil prices in decline and rig counts falling, investors worry about the fallout on labor markets — this is overstated, in general, since total jobs created in the energy sector the past six years is only 300,000.”

Twitter updates tools to combat abuse

CEO Dick Costolo has pledged to reduce the amount of abuse on Twitter. Now the company is rolling out new tools aimed at combating it. “Overall, we now review five times as many user reports as we did previously, and we have tripled the size of the support team focused on handling abuse reports,” Tina Bhatnagar, vice president of user services, wrote in a blog post.3021413_twitter-building-2013-fullwidth

Twitter is hoping changes announced Wednesday will help keep people who harass others off Twitter. In December, Twitter made it easier to report abuse and harassment. It also began allowing people who witness abuse, not just the victims of the abuse, to report it. Twitter said it’s expanding that ability to reporting impersonation, self harm and inappropriate posting of personal information.

Twitter has faced growing pressure to better shield users from abuse, especially as its user growth has stagnated. Earlier this month Costolo said he was “ashamed” at how the company has handled issues with abuse reported by users and took “full responsibility” for not tackling the problem more aggressively. According to an internal memo obtained by The Verge, Costolo responded to a story about Lindy West, a writer frequently targeted with abuse on Twitter. “We suck at dealing with abuse,” Costolo said in the memo.

Ericsson Sues to Block Apple IPhone in U.S. Amid Patent Spat

The licensing battle between Apple Inc. and Ericsson AB is escalating. Ericsson, a pioneer in mobile phones that transformed itself into the world’s largest maker of wireless networks, said Friday it’s filing seven new lawsuits in a U.S. court and is asking the U.S. International Trade Commission to block Apple products from the U.S. market.apple-store

Together, the complaints accuse Apple of infringing as many as 41 patents for some of the fundamental ways mobile devices communicate and for related technology such as user interfaces, battery saving and the operating system. “We have offered them a license; they have a turned it down,” said Kasim Alfalahi, Ericsson’s chief intellectual property officer. “We’re not a company that’s planning to extract more than the value we put on the table.”

Apple had been paying royalties to Stockholm-based Ericsson before a license expired in mid-January. When talks over renewal failed, the companies sued each other, seeking court rulings on whether Ericsson’s royalty demands on fundamental technology were fair and reasonable.

“We’ve always been willing to pay a fair price to secure the rights to standards essential patents covering technology in our products,” Kristin Huguet, an Apple spokeswoman, said in a statement. “Unfortunately, we have not been able to agree with Ericsson on a fair rate for their patents so, as a last resort, we are asking the courts for help.”

Warner Bros. reports that Focus earned an estimated $6.47 million for its opening day, easily taking first place on Friday. The Will Smith-Margot Robbie con artist flick debuted just under Limitless’ $6.6 million first day back in 2011. Unfortunately, early word of mouth appears very mixed as the film received a “B” CinemaScore and sits at a 66 percent user rating on Rotten Tomatoes this morning (where critics disapprove even more at 56 percent). Still, the film’s adult-skewing appeal could balance out some of the early complaints about the film throughout the weekend. BoxOffice is projecting an opening frame of $18.5 million.feb27

Relativity’s The Lazarus Effect debuted to $3.8 million on Friday as it claimed second place for the day, nearly 24 percent lower than last year’s Oculus. The horror pic’s early buzz isn’t heading in the right direction, though: only 33 percent of Rotten Tomatoes users approve of the film so far, while critics have given it an even lower 14 percent. Given the natural tendency for horror pics to drop off quickly, expect the same here. BoxOffice projects a $9.2 million opening weekend.

Fifty Shades of Grey slid into third place yesterday with $3.5 million, down another 56.5 percent from last Friday. The erotic drama has taken in $140.3 million domestically through 15 days of release, putting it 8 percent ahead of the original Twilight. BoxOffice projects a $9.9 million third weekend.

Fox’s Kingsman: The Secret Service continues to display strong holding power as it eased 41 percent from last Friday to $3.12 million in fourth place. The graphic novel adaptation has earned an impressive $77.1 million domestically to date, putting it 1 percent ahead of Daredevil and 31 percent ahead of Jumper through their same release points. Kingsman will also surpass the latter film’s final domestic gross of $80.2 million over the weekend. Look for a weekend total around $10.8 million.

Filling out the top five yesterday was The DUFF, down just 50 percent from opening day last week to $2.14 million. The sleeper hit’s 8-day total stands at just over $15 million, putting it 15 percent ahead of the pace of That Awkward Moment. BoxOffice projects a $6.5 million weekend.

Three well-received holdovers fought for space just outside the top five yesterday. The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water dropped 47.5 percent to $2.11 million, giving it a strong $131.2 total thus far and setting it on course for an $8.9 million frame.

Susan Downing Helps to Raise Awareness for Jamaican Education Project

Susan Downing, CEO of Comprehensive Venture Consulting a Canadian educator and trainer, was recently profiled on Small Business Trendsetters about her efforts to raise donations for an upcoming program to help at-risk youth in Jamaica.

February 27, 2015 – With a background in educating and working with at-risk youth in her native Canada, Susan Downing knows what is needed to provide students with the necessary skills to become small business entrepreneurs. She was recently profiled on Small Business Trendsetters about her plans to start a training program in Jamaica this summer.

The Trendsetters piece covered Downing’s over thirty years of experience in teaching and working with at-risk youth in British Columbia. Now she is taking that knowledge and using it to start an education project at Waterford Primary in Portmore, Jamaica. One area she will focus on is learning how to form a business that can print and sell T-shirts. Jamaica does not have a welfare system or any government programs currently available to teach these skills; many children lack formal training and simply fall through the cracks. For many children in Jamaica, having a marketable skill such as this could mean the difference between abject poverty and financial stability.

“I am thrilled to be able to start this program at Waterford Primary,” commented Downing. “Instead of waiting for the government or charitable organizations to fill their needs, I hope to be able to provide these students with skills that will help them take care of their own needs. This program is vitally important, so I’ll teach as many job and business skills as I can in the time available to give them the best shot at success.”

Downing has a varied background which she believes will come in useful when training the Jamaican students. In addition to industrial education, she has experience as an electrician and dental assistant, and possesses skills such as sewing and crafting which can be helpful for students who wish to pursue a variety of career paths.

If the training in May and June is successful, Downing hopes to expand it to other schools and provide a long-term center of education for at-risk youth. For this year’s trip, she is requesting donations of financial support and supplies such as plain t-shirts, transfer paper and printers for the program. Donations need to be received in time for the program’s start at the beginning of May.
