It may come as quite a surprise to learn that despite almost 1.6 billion Muslims in the world, with almost 365 million Arabic state nationals, that there are almost no animated movies set in this intriguing and important setting. A new 3-D animated movie entitled “Ready Rashid” seeks to fill this gap using the adventures of the pint-sized titular character as a means of sharing stories set in the Arab world. “Ready Rashid” does not involve religious or political themes, but is an entertaining cartoon that emphasizes the similarities that Arab and Muslim children have in common with others around the world.
“Ready Rashid” is the product of artists from around the world led by series creator Stephen Wisher. The main characters include Ready Rashid, a young boy in a Middle Eastern city, with many international friends including American, Chinese, Indian and Briton expatriates. Ready Rashid’s family is a combination of traditional and modern figures, including a father who is airline pilot and a mother who serves as a pediatrician. Other members of the family include a young adult brother, a teenaged sister and an elderly grandfather; these diverse family members help paint a well-rounded portrait of family life in modern Arab society.
“Ready Rashid” will serve as entertainment for children as well as an important program for broadening their understanding of other cultures. This ambitious cartoon series will provide other perspectives on Arab culture, but will require the financial assistance of supporters to reach the market. To raise the $250,000 necessary to find sponsorship by a major animation production company, complete animation and acquire distribution, Stephen Wisher and his team has sponsored a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter. In return for your generous support, you can receive valuable perks like key chains, Polo shirts, handbags, wristwatches, varsity school jackets or Rashid family portraits.
