Fort Lauderdale, FL – February 12, 2018 – Spark of Hope, a licensed and Joint Commission Accredited Substance Abuse Outpatient Treatment Center located in Margate, Florida is proud to launch a First Responders Recovery Program in honor of Police Officer Cindi McCue who tragically took her own life in 2015. Cindi was a 15-year veteran of the Sunrise Police Department whom also served 8 years honorably in the Army including in Operation Desert Storm.
“Cindi was loved by all whom knew her,” said Faith Montgomery, an 18-year veteran in law enforcement and a close friend of Cindi. “Yet, none of us knew that she was suffering…until it was too late.”
Upon learning that Spark of Hope was launching a First Responders Recovery Program in South Florida, Ms. Montgomery asked that the Program be named after Cindi to honor her memory and to help prevent similar tragedies from occurring to other First Responders. “As First Responders, the occupational stress we must incur on a day-to-day basis is sometimes overwhelming. Many of us carry our stress internally and suffer in silence, as Cindi had done. We must put our pride aside and ask for help.”
Spark of Hope’s Owner and Executive Director, David Lam, has long dreamed about launching a program to help our heroes who serve and protect our way of life. As a former Marine who suffers from PTSD, David knows first-hand the cataclysmic effects of mental health disorder. “As a society, we need to do a better job at educating the public and eradicating the stigma associated with mental health disorder or addiction, particularly if it is trauma related. It is my fervent hope that the Cindi McCue Initiative will spark other similar programs throughout the country where first responders have a platform readily available to help them in their hour of need. Our heroes put their lives on the line to serve and protect us. They are human beings just like us, with real pain and burdens. It’s time we do something to give back to them as they’ve given to us so selflessly.”
Ms. Montgomery and Spark of Hope are in the process of forming a foundation on behalf of Officer McCue whereby partial proceeds of the Cindi McCue Initiative will be donated to help first responders as well as their families in need. “Through the Cindi McCue Initiative, we hope that we can turn a tragedy into a vehicle to help save hundreds of lives,” concludes Faith.
